3 Swaddles for Newborns that Promote Longer Sleep

I didn’t realize how much impact swaddling had until we didn’t use a swaddle one night for our 2 week old. We wanted to see how much of a difference it made when he wore one versus when he didn’t. We quickly found out that the startle reflex is not a joke and our baby Caysen was waking very frequently during the night. So much that we got the swaddle out after a few times of waking up and of course, it helped as it had every other night.

Caysen is now 7 months old and I’ve tried quite a few different swaddles but these are my three favorite. I hope that after reading this post, you’ll feel confident in choosing a swaddle that will help your baby sleep. There’s so many different brands of swaddles for newborns, some swaddles didn’t hold him very tightly and he was easily able to break out or the quality wasn’t there. The following are the 3 best swaddles for newborns that I have personally tried and they work so well, I stopped searching for other swaddles.

1. Mebie Baby Swaddles

We first used the swaddle we received from the hospital but it didn’t take long for him to break out of that at night. It was too stiff and hard to use. My husband really got the hang of swaddling down but even he had a tough time with the hospital swaddle. We found that the Mebie Baby swaddle had more give, kept him in the swaddling position and is aesthetically cute, which is always a bonus. The swaddles make great light blankets for the summer time too. I loved that we could use these as both swaddles and blankets. The next swaddle on the list can’t be used as a blanket but was an even better option for a swaddle.

2. Velcro Halo Sleep Sack Swaddle

This type of swaddle is really nice for stronger babies who are able to break out of a traditional swaddle and great to use if you don’t want to manually swaddle yourself. The velcro makes it incredibly easy and always kept him in place. I never needed to worry about him breaking out of this swaddle and he was very comfy. He continued to sleep very well. Halo also makes warm velcro swaddles for the winter months which we really loved. We used this swaddle until Caysen started to roll and then we fully transitioned to the Dreamland Baby Non Weighted Sleep Sack Swaddle.

3. Dreamland Baby Bamboo Viscose Swaddle Sleep Sack (Non-Weighted)

If you are wanting a sleep sack swaddle that will grow with the baby, this is the way to go. We started using this swaddle interchangeably with the Halo just to have another option if the Halo was dirty. If I had to choose one brand for swaddles and sleep sacks, this would be it. The Dreamland Baby Swaddle is great because it has velcro to keep the baby in place when using as a swaddle but also has the cut out arms for a sleep sack to transition when your baby starts to roll over. Caysen started rolling when he was four months so we used this exclusively from 4-6 months.

Final Thoughts on the Best Swaddles for Newborns

These three swaddles became essential in helping Caysen and I get the sleep we needed each night. On the nights we didn’t use one, or when we ran out of clean swaddles, he woke up frequently, which only confirmed how much they helped. Motherhood has stretched my faith in more ways than I expected, especially when it comes to sleep. Anyone who knows me knows I need rest to function, and I’m so thankful that God gives us practical tools, like swaddles, to help both moms and babies rest more peacefully. In those early days, intrusive thoughts often crept in, especially fears around SIDS and suffocation. Every night before bed, I would quietly pray, “Lord, please watch over Caysen through this night.” These swaddles didn’t just help him sleep better, they helped calm my anxious heart, too, knowing he was secure.
