Time Blocking: The Secret to a Productive Day and Better Mental Health
They say you can have it all but can you really? Is balance just an illusion we chase while juggling work, parenting, and everyday responsibilities?
When I got pregnant, I knew I wanted to stay home with my son, but I also wanted to keep working. Freelancing seemed like the perfect solution, I could do both. But the reality was overwhelming. Being at home with Caysen while working left me feeling constantly pulled in a million directions. When I was working, he needed me. When I was with him, work nagged at the back of my mind.
Add in responding to family and friends, managing house chores, spending time with my husband, working out, pumping and eating healthy – there just never seemed to be enough hours in the day.
But I found a strategy that changed everything: time blocking. By the end of this post, you’ll learn how I use time blocking to take control of my schedule, reduce anxiety, and create a better balance between work and family, so you can enjoy a more focused, productive day, too.
What Is Time Blocking, and How Can It Help You Have a More Productive Day?
Time blocking is a simple yet powerful way to take control of your schedule and set yourself up for a truly productive day. It involves dividing your day into specific blocks of time, each dedicated to a particular task or activity. Instead of jumping from one thing to another, you follow a structured plan, reducing stress and improving focus.

How to Get Started with Time Blocking
- Map Out Your Day
Start by writing down your daily schedule. On a piece of paper (or on my free Time Blocking Planner), list the hours of your day from the time you wake up to when you go to bed. - Fill in Your Priorities
Begin by blocking out the non-negotiable parts of your day, things like driving the kids to school, commuting to work, working, picking up the kids, making dinner, and family time. These are your foundation blocks. - Schedule Your Tasks
Make a list of everything else you need to accomplish that day. Estimate how much time each task will take – be honest! If you’re unsure, give yourself extra time as a buffer. You’ll thank yourself later. - Allow for Flexibility
Add at least 15 minutes between tasks. There’s nothing worse than feeling behind and getting anxious because your schedule is too rigid. The whole purpose of time blocking is to create structure without stress. - Plan When to Check Emails & Messages
Want to take your productivity to the next level? Set specific times to check your emails and text messages. This is something I do, and it has been a game-changer! My friends and family even know when I’ll be available, which helps me stay fully present in whatever task I’m doing without distractions.
By structuring your day with time blocking, you create a sense of control over your schedule, reduce anxiety, and become more intentional with your time. And most importantly, you give yourself the tools to consistently create a more productive day, on your terms. Here’s how I took the idea of time blocking and customized it to fit my day-to-day life with my son.
How I Incorporate Time Blocking Into My Day
To make time blocking work for me, I have built my schedule around Caysen’s wake times. I start each day by waking up early and tackling work for one of my clients. Knowing I can finish a task before Caysen wakes up gives me a sense of accomplishment right at the start of the day.
Once he is up, I switch to lighter, more flexible tasks, things I can do while interacting with him as he’s playing nearby. I throw in a load of laundry, water the plants, read my devotion, journal, and of course, feed and play with him.
At 9:00 a.m., I briefly check my phone and respond to texts and emails. When Caysen goes down for his first nap around 9:30 a.m., I use that time for my first focused work block. After his nap, I move into my mid-day routine: a quick workout, getting ready for the day, lunch for both of us, and quality playtime.
I check my phone and emails again around noon, just a quick scan to stay on top of anything important. Then, during his second nap, I dive into my second major work session. Once he’s awake again, I shift into home mode: dishes, tidying up, scheduling appointments or meal planning, and one last check of my messages.
By the time Nate gets home, if there’s anything I haven’t finished, he takes over with Caysen so I can wrap up any loose ends in my office. After that, it’s time to start dinner and settle into our evening together.
This routine gives me structure and flexibility while allowing me to stay present for my family. It isn’t perfect every day but it helps me manage my time more intentionally and makes room for a productive day on my own terms.

How Time Blocking Boosts My Productivity and Mental Health
Not only does time blocking help me get more done, it also completely changes the way I feel during the day.
Before I started time blocking, I constantly felt like I was multitasking but never actually present. I’d be playing with Caysen, but in the back of my mind, I was running through my to-do list or feeling the pull to respond to those emails, texts or calls. It was exhausting, like I was trying to do everything at once but never fully there for any of it.
Time blocking changed that. By structuring my day and setting clear boundaries, like only checking my phone at designated times, I finally gave myself permission to focus. When I am working, I can truly work. When I am with Caysen, I can enjoy those little moments without feeling guilty about what other things need to get done because I know they will get done when that specific time comes around. It has taught me to set clear boundaries and prioritize what truly matters.
One of the biggest shifts is how much calmer I feel. I’m not rushing through the day, feeling overwhelmed by everything I need to do. I know exactly what has to get done and when, which lets me actually enjoy the time I have with my family. Time blocking doesn’t just make me more productive, it made my days feel lighter, more intentional, and way less stressful.
Final Thoughts on Time Blocking for a Productive Day
Time blocking isn’t just a productivity hack, it’s a mindset shift. When you start your day with a clear plan, you give yourself the gift of intention, presence, and peace. Instead of rushing through your to-do list, you can move through your day with purpose and confidence, knowing there’s a time for everything that matters. Time Blocking helps me live with more intention and that really matters to me. I believe God has given me this life, this family, this work, this season…and I want to steward it well by being fully present and making space for what matters most.
Whether you’re juggling work, motherhood, relationships, or all of the above, this simple strategy can help you reclaim your time, and your calm.
